How NRIs Can Approve Interior Materials and Colours Remotely

Choosing finishes from another country is one of the hardest parts of a remote interior project. A laminate, fabric, paint shade or wood tone can look very different depending on lighting, phone camera settings and screen quality, so NRI homeowners need a more structured approval process.

Use exact finish references

Whenever possible, approve a product name, code or sample reference instead of a general description such as beige, walnut or grey. Exact references reduce confusion when several similar shades are available.

Ask for photos in consistent lighting

Request images in neutral daylight or consistent indoor lighting. Comparing finishes photographed under different warm and cool lights can make them appear unrelated even when they are similar.

Review combinations, not only individual samples

A finish may look good alone but clash with the flooring, countertop or wall colour. Ask to see key materials together so you can judge the overall palette.

Decide which choices need physical verification

If a finish is particularly important, a trusted family member or local representative can inspect the physical sample in Bangalore. Use this selectively for high-impact choices rather than for every small item.

Record the final approved palette

Keep one final list of approved codes and room locations. If a revised design uses a different material, make sure the change is clearly recorded instead of assuming the earlier approval still applies.

Check completed work against the approved reference

During progress reviews, compare installed or manufactured finishes with the approved schedule. This is more useful than relying on memory from an earlier video call.
